Exergian

This is a few of the posters I selected from the tv series by Exergian. This is a great example of simple graphic design that works. I've just picked out a few but there all great.

In some ways these relate to how I went about designing my book covers as I just used simple silhouetted images.

Book covers with spot varnish.

On the book above the name of the author and parts of the images are highlighted with a sliver spot varnish. I think this is an effective process used on book covers and is some thing I want to try out with my book designs.


The 'Cold Mountain' cover is a great example of a good book cover design. It uses simple shapes and layered imagery to create impact for the book. However within this design it is only parts of the image that have a clear spot varnish.

Angus Hyland, with assistant Masumi Briozzo, has designed four book covers for Polygon's re-issue of the novels and short stories of James Kelman, the controversial Booker Prize-winning author.

Oscar Wilson//Studio Oscar.

This is a really good example for me to look at as is using just the silhouettes for the the imagery, which is what I'm using for my book covers. Also something I've picked up on with a lot of book cover design is that on some the title of the book is highlighted using a spot varnish.Maybe this is something I could consider as a finish on my series of book jackets.

Boarders.

Now this is a faber and faber book, I found it quite easy to pick them out from the rest of the books on the shelf as each book has the logo in the same place on the spine/front cover and back. This is something I need to consider when adding the logo to my designs!!!



Penguin book:
This book cover is a real eye catcher on the shelf which is one of the reasons that I took a photo of it in the first place. Its the limited use of colour that works really well and creates a really effective piece of impact design.
Also another thing to point out is the use of a spot varnish used to highlight the title of the book and the rest of the book is matte. I'm thinking of maybe using this within my designs?!?!

Faber and Faber book layout.

In every faber&faber book the layout on the back of the book is of a similar format as seen below:


And also the faber and faber logo appears three times on the cover as a whole. Once on the front cover in the bottom right hand corner, one directly on the bottom of the spine and again on the back in the bottom left hand corner. I need to take this in to consideration when designing my book covers.

Faber Finds generative book covers

'Faber Finds is a recently launched service offered by publisher Faber and Faber that utilises digital print technology and affordability to make out-of-print books available once more. Basically, a book is only printed when someone orders it - and, thanks to some clever gener­ative programming by Universal Everything collaborator Karsten Schmidt (undertaken through his own studio, postspectacular.com), each cover printed promises to be totally unique. Various decorative elements designed by Marian Bantjes are arranged by the programme into a decorative border around the book’s title and author. The great thing is about these cover designs is that they work really well as a series, within the use of the coding above.
As each genre is depicted by different geometric shaped boarders. An example of this is seen below:

Crush Design.

This is a great limited edition series of books were you create the cover designs. It comes complete with a DIY cover with a sticker sheet so the fans can decorate their own books. I think this is a really nice way to involve the reader and to let you have the choice of the design that goes on the cover.

Charlie Higson Series.

These book covers take on the theme of the horror genre and b movies which reflect the tone of the books. The use of type and image works really well, with the use of colour to highlight this.

Film Posters

I came across these remakes of film posters designed by Olly Moss. These are great as they use a limited colour palette and simple illustrations to create impact. I think these come across well and relate well to the films they are intended for.
